BIRDWATCHER

In “Bird Cabinet”, Norwegian artist Karin Augusta Nogva continues her long-term project The Birdwatcher, where she transforms herself into a performative bird, dressed in a red suit, black mask, pointed hat, and beak. Through this figure, she gives voice to endangered and red-listed birds and draws attention to their vulnerable existence in the degradation of nature.

The title “Bird Cabinet” refers to an imagined space where the voices of birds are heard and taken into account when humans make decisions about development in vulnerable nature, a symbolic installation. Nogva invites the audience into this space to reflect on the birds’ situation and on the broader relationship between humans and nature.

Nogva’s artistic practice moves between printmaking, installation, performance, and interdiciplinery collaboration. She draws inspiration from Japanese aesthetics and art, as well as from the connections to Norwegian and Scandinavian art and design, in the same way that the birds along the Norwegian coast are Eurasian and migrate all the way to Japan and back to Norway.

Nogva’s artistic practice spans printmaking, installation, and performance, as well as collaborations across various disciplines. Influenced by Japanese art and culture, she explores strong connections between the craft traditions of Japan and Norway. Her studio is at Aggregat Kunstnerfellesskap in Ålesund. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the Art Academy in Bergen, Norway, and Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland.
